The Bears gave up total yards with coming through the air and coming on the ground. Only Arkansas Week 3 and Oklahoma Week 1, fall have gone for over yards against a Ryan Beard-coached defense. We needed to get more opportunities for our offense to go score but we've got to get off the field.
The Hoos is loose! The Bears allowed or more offensive yards on defense on three different occasions in the season, the program's final year under Dave Steckel. Missouri State has had problems getting to the quarterback in recent weeks and it continued on Saturday with the Bears only sacking Tommy Schuster once. Throughout the afternoon, Schuster had plenty of time to throw, he extended plays with his legs and was able to pick up multiple third-and-longs to demoralize the defense.
The Hawks were on third-down conversions while Schuster was of through the air for yards and two touchdowns. Against the run, the Bears were no better with the Hawks having two players rush for over 75 yards. Tyler Hoosman rushed for with a whopping 9. It's one of the worst things you can say about a football team, and we've been putting off calling it one for a few weeks now, but it's time to label the Bears as an undisciplined football team. Never mind the inability to stop the run or sack the quarterback, the Bears, too often, are called for silly penalties and hurt themselves. The Bears keep doing it, they know they're doing it and it hasn't stopped. The latest example came late in the second quarter when the Bears were trying to hold on to a halftime lead.
Believe it or not, the Bears actually led this game late in the second quarter. On fourth-and-1 from their own 37, the Fighting Hawks lined up to go for it in what appeared to be an obvious attempt to draw the Bears offsides. It worked, the Bears jumped and the Hawks kept their offense on the field. Right after, an yard completion was aided by a personal foul call on Tahj Chambers who attempted to participate in a play after his helmet was knocked off legally.
The extra 15 yards moved UND closer before the Hawks booted a yard field goal as time in the half expired. Those are free points that the Bears gave up. No, they didn't impact the outcome of the game but it's similar to what the team has shown throughout the first four weeks of the regular season.
